Other delicacies

The market at Kompong Thom was filled with interesting food items. These fried spiders are a specialty of the region and considered a real delicacy.

Cambodians first began eating insects under the Khmer Rouge rule. Rice and other food was severely rationed, so many people suffered from starvation and malnourishment. For this reason, the Cambodian people looked elsewhere for sources of food; insects became a natural choice. They are abundant and the supply couldn't be cut off by the leaders.

Many Cambodians still enjoy these treats today. Though many tourists do like to partake, I didn't! Photos taken in December 2016.

More offerings

Some people leave quite elaborate offerings at the temple, like this meal of suckling pig and sides.

Other offerings are more basic, like a couple of eggs and a chunk of bacon. In any case, I hope the spirits are appeased! (I also hope someone gets to enjoy the food after it has been on offer for a sufficient time). Photos taken in December 2016.

Culinary delights

Good food was not in short supply in Bali, from local specialties like vegetarian lawar to sweet dumplings to traditional mi goreng, everything was delicious!

And of course no afternoon is complete without a little coffee boost. The Balinese have taken some tips from the Viennese by serving it on a little tray with embellishments. Photos taken in December 2016.

At the market

Some things at the open air markets look better than others.

I suppose this is an attractive presentation to some, but it certainly didn't appeal to me! Photos taken in November 2016.

Chien?

I'm not sure what this sign means, though I admit, I was attracted to the lights. This was another stand at the night market in Hoi An.

The meat on a stick looked interesting, but not enough for me to try it. I don't think it's dog, at least!

More signs can be found here. Photo taken in November 2016.

Mr. Meinl

Julius Meinl is one of my favorite brands of coffee, I haven't tried the chocolates yet, but I'm sure they're good too! For more signs, visit Signs, Signs. Photo taken in May 2015.

Bretzels

These pretzels were tasty! Maybe the best I've eaten away from Germany. Photo taken at the Saint Lawrence Market in Toronto, September 2010.

Fresh grilled

There's nothing like a fresh-grilled Amazon fish to whet your appetite after a long hike through the rain forest. Photo taken in the Amazon jungle, Brazil, January 2007.
