Phnom Penh by night

A city always looks different at night, Phnom Penh is no exception.  We drove around this traffic circle both night and day. It shows King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia's last ruling king.

We stayed in the popular Beung Keng Kang district, where the bars and restaurants strive to add some color to the night.

The many night markets also help to light up the night. Photos taken in December 2016.

Sunset in Phnom Penh

The Panorama Bar has beautiful views over the mighty Mekong. So does the Foreign Correspondents Club, where this photo comes from. Photo taken in December 2016.

Island living

Breakfasting right on the beach is not such a bad way to start the day! You an follow it up with a sunbath or a snorkel. Photo taken in December 2016.

Culinary delights

Good food was not in short supply in Bali, from local specialties like vegetarian lawar to sweet dumplings to traditional mi goreng, everything was delicious!

And of course no afternoon is complete without a little coffee boost. The Balinese have taken some tips from the Viennese by serving it on a little tray with embellishments. Photos taken in December 2016.

Home of HAL

The Hotel New York is actually the former Holland American Line building. This is where the cruise line got its start. There were lots of interesting details throughout the building.

The Holland American Line initials could also be seen quite often. For more treasures, take a look here. Photos taken in May 2016.

Rather small

Breakfast at the Hotel New York is a real treat, especially with the interesting poetry on the walls: The croquettes in this restaurant are on the small side. -- C.B. Vaandragger. For more murals, take a look here. Photo taken in May 2016.

PS: Happy Fourth of July to my American friends!

Window sign

I found these beautifully carved leaves in the window of a Beisl in Vienna. Combined with the Kuchen ist Liebe (Cooing is Love) sign, I think it makes a nice scene. You'll find more signs at Signs, Signs. Photo taken in May 2015.

A Viennese classic

Cafe Sperl is a Viennese institution. I enjoyed both the atmosphere and the delights that awaited me inside.

You can find more signs at Signs, Signs. Photo taken in May 2015.

Eat your veggies!

Although these guys are almost too cute to eat! They were found outside El Barrio restaurant in Phoenix Arizona. Photo taken in February 2013. For more murals, take a look at Monday Murals.

Schnitzel store

If you want to try some real German specialties while in Berlin, this is the place to do it! It has been tested and approved by my family. For more signs, visit Signs, Signs. Photo taken in December 2012.

Ratskeller doorway

A look at the doorway to the Ratskeller of Köpenick. It's a cute little village near Berlin with lots of historic buildings and sights. Every town has a Rathaus (city hall) and a Ratskeller (traditional restaurant inside/near the city hall) and here is the one you'll find in Köpenick. I didn't try it out, but it looks like there's a potential customer reading the menu. Photo taken in April 2012.

Guard dogs

This restaurant is named after the old practice of letting guard dogs roam the walled city of Saint Malo once the sun went down. Apparently these dogs were pretty fierce and the fear of facing one in the dark streets was enough to keep people out of mischief. I'm not sure it's the best name for a hotel- restaurant, but it's historic! Photo taken in April 2003. For more signs, visit Signs, Signs.

Local delicacy

Tasting the local delicacies is a must-do on any trip. Since Key West is familiarly known  as the Conch Republic it makes sense that conch fritters are the food of choice on the island. Photo taken in May 2010.

Rheinsberg ratskeller

Although it may not sound appealing to our English ears, the Ratskeller is just the name for a traditional restaurant that would be found in the Rathaus (city hall) of every German city. In German, "Rat" means advice, so calling the City Hall the Advicehouse sort of makes sense. It looks like this Ratskeller has attracted a couple of patrons at least! Photo taken in November 2011.

Ye olde tavern

Here's a look at the Old Town Tavern where we stopped for lunch after the river cruise. It was a bit rustic, but I liked the simple feel of it. And the colorful murals were a nice touch.

We were served up a portion of rice and beans, salad and mystery meat. They wouldn't say what it was, just that it "tastes like chicken". My husband tried it and he believes it was croc. I just stayed with the stuff I knew! Photo taken in December 2011.

Summer treats

I'm just about out of shots from Saugatuck. I know this is a summery place and I hate to remind you that winter's on the way, but it's just so darn cute! Photo taken in June 2011.

Terraced restaurant

I would have loved to try this restaurant, but it was closed for a wedding. Maybe next time I'm in Rochester. This terrace has a wonderful view right over the High Falls I showed you a few days ago. I can see why it would be a popular choice for a reception. Photo taken in September 2011.

Floral cafe

Another of the wonderful cafes that lined the streets of Rethmynon. Would have loved to stop here too! Photo taken in May 2011.

Tasty

This was another restaurant in Crete that I would have loved to try. Tapas and wine sound like a perfect combination to me!

Cute cafe

Rethmynon was filled with cute cafes and restaurants. I would have loved to sit down at one of these tables if I had had a bit more time. Photo taken in May 2011.
