Sadly, these "stumbling stones" are found in cities across Europe where Jewish people were deported and then killed in concentration camps. They are a stark reminder of a dark period of history. Photo taken in May 2015.
I found in Vienna, a large excavated box on the sidewalk, covered with glass and inside it hundreds of apartment keys of deported people who lived in the neighborhood and labeled with their names.
It was a dark period of history, but I think we all need to be reminded. Happy Monday, have a great week ahead!

ReplyDeleteI have seen these in other photoblogs- they do have a haunting effect, a stark reminder.
ReplyDeleteI just learned about these stones last week when I was looking for things to do in Berlin.

ReplyDeleteSad but a needed reminder of how horribly out of control things can get.
