These are two traditional costumes that come from the Commedia dell'arte tradition in Italy. The man on the left represents Il Capitano while the one on the right represents Dottore della Peste. There were many representations of these two in Venice, but this pair was one of the few which agreed to pose for me. Photo taken in February 2004.
Looks scary, but it seems these characters are popular among Italians.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy Friday.
Fantastic! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this whole series. The costumed are soooooo elaborate and detailed! Unlike what we are used to for Holloween and such where a few costumes are elaborate and many are just thrown together. This is really Arte! Not to mention the backgrounds… It looks like a theater set more than a city. Your shots could all be blown up and framed, for sure!
ReplyDeleteThese are my favourite so far:)
ReplyDeleteI might have been afraid to ask permission to take their picture. I'm glad you weren't!
ReplyDeleteLooks very good, maybe I should consider going to Venice with the carnaval. It must be very special.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
I'm glad these two agreed to pose!
ReplyDeleteWell, they look familiar! I'm pretty sure the one on the left was my 9th grade algebra teacher and the one on the right was our school counselor.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid my comment may not have made it but I said these two look familiar...the one on the left resembles my 9th grade algebra teacher, and the one of the right is our school counselor!
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderful using these masks!
