If there's one thing you're certain to see in Italy, it's fancy churches. The Chiesa di San Moisèis no exception. There are so many statues and carvings, it's hard to know where to look! Photo taken in February 2004.
What a gorgeous facade. I had to laugh at the name, though: what an oxymoron - Church of Moses. Somehow I don't think the legendary Moses would approve. Or maybe there's a Catholic Moses in the roster of saints?
@Lowell - I hadn't though about that, but you're right it is a funny name for a christian church. I guess the Catholics found him so great, they sainted him whether he would have wanted it or not.
Beautiful carvings. I can believe it would be hard to decide where to look; people really put in a lot of time and money on churches back then didn't they?
It's a sheer beauty! I love the details.

Absolutely gorgeous façade!
ReplyDeleteFor a man found in a basket in the bullrushes this is an awfully fancy church dedicated to his name!
