Punchbowl cemetery

This burial place is officially called the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. But since it's located inside the Punchbowl Crater, everyone just refers to it as the Punchbowl Cemetery. It was an interesting place to visit and quite moving too. Photo taken in Honolulu, January 2010. For a look at more cemeteries, visit Tapophile Tragics.

  1. It looks huge and I'm surprised that all the markers are level with the ground. "Punchbowl" doesn't seem very dignified for such a place, though! ;-)

I'm assuming it is a military cemetery...

  4. It looks quite flat to be a punchbowl, but I assume it is much bigger than this picture. I also thought by the official name and the extreme neatness and precision of the markers that this was a military site.

  5. Oh dear, I fear I am going to be profane. I know everyone in a military cemetery is dead. I know that. But the way that military cemeteries are laid out, leach the life out of the dead. They leach the individuality out of them. They appear as no more than cogs in a wheel. This is the sadness of a military cemetery, to me. I understand this will upset many of you. And I apologise for that. But my opinion still remains.

  6. This site of uniformity seems to be a symbol of togetherness shoulder to shoulder in death! But yes, individuality seems elusive!
